The Wine of Love

 A bottle and wine glass are illustrated using the opening lyrics of “Khamrat Al-Hubb” by Sabah Fakhri. Fakhri, from Aleppo, was one of the greatest icons of Levantine music. This piece was composed shortly after his death in November of 2021.

 “The Wine of Love, I pour it so my heart will forget its wounds.”

 The quote is repeated exactly seven times in the image, and once underneath in black for clarity.

Beginning working on a late draft of this piece aired on Al-Jazeera’s Al-Marsad program, for which they sent a film crew to the studio. The same draft was completed a couple weeks later on BBC Arabic’s soundstage, and presented to the BBC Extra crew as a gift. The final draft is pictured above. A limited edition run of facsimile giclée prints was made from the scan of the original. You can watch the interviews below:
