Dervish of Light IA whirling dervish is illustrated in Arabic calligraphy in the jali Diwani script. In Islam, “Dervish” can refer broadly to members of a Sufi fraternity (Tariqah) or more narrowly to a religious mendicant, who chose or accepted material poverty; while dervishes are known around the globe for their ritual spinning in their unique attire as an attempt to reach a state of clear-mindedness and connection with the divine.
The phrase “Light on Light” is repeated throughout the dervish’s hat and robes. The concept that all life and creation is light upon light, with the injunction to cultivate and approach the light and while struggling against darkness is found in mystic traditions across nearly every religious movement. The phrase specifically in Arabic appears in the 34th verse of the 24th Surah of the Holy Quran Surah An-Nur. This sentence is commonly heard throughout the Middle East.

في الإسلام وبشكل عام يشير مصطلح الدرويش [“الدراويش” بصيغة الجمع] إلى أعضاء الأخوية الصوفيّة أو أتباع الطريقة المولوية، وبشكل أدق الدرويش هو المتسول الديني “الفقير لله” الذي اختار حياة الزهد والترفّع عن الحياة الماديّة، كما عُرف من طقوسهم أعمال الغزل وحياكة ملابسهم يدويا سعيا منهم لتربية النفس والوصول إلى حالة صفاء ذهني تقربهم من الخالق.
بعبارة “نور على نور” تم تصوير هذا العمل باستخدام الخط العربي الديواني الجلي؛ هذه العبارة الشائعة في جميع أنحاء الشرق الأوسط والتي يستخدمها الدراويش في تزيين ألبستهم و قبعاتهم.
إن المفاهيم القائلة بالتنوّر في مواجهة الظلمات وبأن الحياة وجميع المخلوقات إنما هي تجسيد لعبارة “نور على نور” كانت من أبرز المفاهيم التي تقوم عليها التقاليد الصوفية عبر كل الحركات الدينية تقريبا كما أتى ذكر هذه العبارة في الآية 34 من سورة النور 24 في القرآن الكريم.

Un derviche tourneur est illustré en calligraphie arabe dans l’écriture jali Diwani. En Islam, « Derviche » peut désigner au sens large les membres d’une fraternité soufie (Tariqah) ou plus étroitement à un mendiant religieux, qui a choisi ou accepté la pauvreté matérielle ; tandis que les derviches sont connus dans le monde entier pour leur rotation rituelle dans leur tenue unique dans le but d’atteindre un état de lucidité et de connexion avec le divin.
La phrase « Light on Light » est répétée dans le chapeau et les robes du derviche. Le concept selon lequel toute vie et création est lumière sur lumière, avec l’injonction de cultiver et d’approcher la lumière et tout en luttant contre les ténèbres se retrouve dans les traditions mystiques de presque tous les mouvements religieux. L’expression spécifiquement en arabe apparaît dans le 34e verset de la 24e sourate du Saint Coran Sourate An-Nur. Cette phrase est couramment entendue dans tout le Moyen-Orient.
