A verse from the poem “8th Son” by Syrian poet Golan Haji is written once in the Diwani Jali Arabic calligraphy script to create the image of a human skull in profile.

This piece was one of eight designs, commissioned by Reel Festivals to accompany their poetry publication featuring contemporary poets from Lebanon, Syria, and Scotland. A piece was commissioned for each of the eight poets featured in the festival. In preparation for the festival, all of the poets traveled to Lebanon in order to translate each other’s poems from Arabic to English and vice versa, this is one of those recently translated poems.

كانت هذه القطعة واحدة من ثمانية تصاميم، تمت رعايتها من مهرجانات ريل لترافق نشرهم الشعري الذي يضم شعراء معاصرين من لبنان وسوريا واسكتلندا. تمت رعاية قطعة واحدة لكل شاعر من الشعراء الثمانية لتعرض في المهرجان. تحضيراً للمهرجان, سافر جميع الشعراء إلى لبنان لكي يترجموا قصائدهم من العربي إلى الانكليزي وبالعكس، وهذه واحدة من تلك القصائد المترجمة

Always
those who are being loved are the others

I will not live
as a stone in a locked room

I will lie down under the skull of my father

as an incomplete kiss
I will leave the lips of my sister

she who has just been killed.
