The Surahs السور

This page contains information regarding specific surahs for the Quran of Solidarity project. Additionally, I’ve had several of my patrons ask what a surah is, so I’ve included a brief explaination of the term surah in general on this page.

What Is a Surah?

In the simplest terms, a surah is a chapter of the Holy Quran. Each of the 114 surahs in the Quran were revealed individually to the Prophet by the angel Gabriel on behalf of God. Each surah varies greatly in length, some surahs contain as few as three verses while others contain hundreds. They are arranged so that the longest surahs are found and the beginning of the Quran, but get shorter as you read along (with some exceptions). For convenience of daily prayer, the Quran is divided into thirty nearly equal partitions known as Juz. This word, juz, is often translated into English as ‘chapter’, which is why there is no proper English equivalent for the term surah.
