This Surah, entitled ‘Al-Waqia’ is composed of 96 different verses.  A translation of the whole surah can be seen below. The Hindi numerals appear at the end of every verse. All 96 verses are included, and none are repeated.

When the event befalleth – (1) There is no denying that it will befall – (2) Abasing (some), exalting (others); (3) When the earth is shaken with a shock (4) And the hills are ground to powder (5) So that they become a scattered dust, (6) And ye will be three kinds: (7) (First) those on the right hand; what of those on the right hand? (8) And (then) those on the left hand; what of those on the left hand? (9) And the foremost in the race, the foremost in the race: (10) Those are they who will be brought nigh (11) In gardens of delight; (12) A multitude of those of old (13) And a few of those of later time. (14) On lined couches, (15) Reclining therein face to face. (16) There wait on them immortal youths (17) With bowls and ewers and a cup from a pure spring (18) Wherefrom they get no aching of the head nor any madness, (19) And fruit that they prefer (20) And flesh of fowls that they desire. (21) And (there are) fair ones with wide, lovely eyes, (22) Like unto hidden pearls, (23) Reward for what they used to do. (24) There hear they no vain speaking nor recrimination (25) (Naught) but the saying: Peace, (and again) Peace. (26) And those on the right hand; what of those on the right hand? (27) Among thornless lote-trees (28) And clustered plantains, (29) And spreading shade, (30) And water gushing, (31) And fruit in plenty (32) Neither out of reach nor yet forbidden, (33) And raised couches; (34) Lo! We have created them a (new) creation (35) And made them virgins, (36) Lovers, friends, (37) For those on the right hand; (38) A multitude of those of old (39) And a multitude of those of later time. (40) And those on the left hand: What of those on the left hand? (41) In scorching wind and scalding water (42) And shadow of black smoke, (43) Neither cool nor refreshing. (44) Lo! heretofore they were effete with luxury (45) And used to persist in the awful sin. (46) And they used to say: When we are dead and have become dust and bones, shall we then, forsooth, be raised again, (47) And also our forefathers? (48) Say (unto them, O Muhammad): Lo! those of old and those of later time (49) Will all be brought together to the tryst of an appointed day. (50) Then lo! ye, the erring, the deniers, (51) Ye verily will eat of a tree called Zaqqum (52) And will fill your bellies therewith; (53) And thereon ye will drink of boiling water, (54) Drinking even as the camel drinketh. (55) This will be their welcome on the Day of Judgment. (56) We created you. Will ye then admit the truth? (57) Have ye seen that which ye emit? (58) Do ye create it or are We the Creator? (59) We mete out death among you, and We are not to be outrun, (60) That We may transfigure you and make you what ye know not. (61) And verily ye know the first creation. Why, then, do ye not reflect? (62) Have ye seen that which ye cultivate? (63) Is it ye who foster it, or are We the Fosterer? (64) If We willed, We verily could make it chaff, then would ye cease not to exclaim: (65) Lo! we are laden with debt! (66) Nay, but we are deprived! (67) Have ye observed the water which ye drink? (68) Is it ye who shed it from the raincloud, or are We the Shedder? (69) If We willed We verily could make it bitter. Why then, give ye not thanks? (70) Have ye observed the fire which ye strike out; (71) Was it ye who made the tree thereof to grow, or were We the grower? (72) We, even We, appointed it a memorial and a comfort for the dwellers in the wilderness. (73) Therefor (O Muhammad), praise the name of thy Lord, the Tremendous. (74) Nay, I swear by the places of the stars – (75) And lo! that verily is a tremendous oath, if ye but knew – (76) That (this) is indeed a noble Qur’an (77) In a Book kept hidden (78) Which none toucheth save the purified, (79) A revelation from the Lord of the Worlds. (80) Is it this Statement that ye scorn, (81) And make denial thereof your livelihood? (82) Why, then, when (the soul) cometh up to the throat (of the dying) (83) And ye are at that moment looking (84) - And We are nearer unto him than ye are, but ye see not – (85) Why then, if ye are not in bondage (unto Us), (86) Do ye not force it back, if ye are truthful? (87) Thus if he is of those brought nigh, (88) Then breath of life, and plenty, and a Garden of delight. (89) And if he is of those on the right hand, (90) Then (the greeting) “Peace be unto thee” from those on the right hand. (91) But if he is of the rejecters, the erring, (92) Then the welcome will be boiling water (93) And roasting at hell-fire. (94) Lo! this is certain truth. (95) Therefor (O Muhammad) praise the name of thy Lord, the Tremendous. (96)

In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful

This piece of calligraphy on canvas features a gavel drawn with the 6th article of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, as translated below.  In this particular piece a monochromatic color scheme was chosen for ease of practicing initially, also because the blue and white carries the political significance of this piece. The 6th article of the UDHR is written 17 times in the background. Making calligraphy both the subject matter and the canvas of the piece.

6th Article
Everyone has the right to recognition everywhere as a person before the law.

المادة 6.

• لكل إنسان أينما وجد الحق في أن يعترف بشخصيته القانونية.
  هذه العمل الفني من الخط على القماش يوضح مطرقة محكمة مرسومة بكلمات المادة السادسة من التصريح العالمي لحقوق الانسان. في هذه القطعة الخاصة  تم اختيار أسلوب أحادي اللون لتسهيل التدريب مبدئياً. كما أن اللونين الأزق والأبيض يحملان المعنى السياسي للقطعة. تم كتابة المادة السادسة من حقوق الانسان 17 مرة في الخلفية  لتجعل من الخط موضوع وقماش هذا العمل

علاقة عشق غيرت مجرى حياة الشاب الأميركي إيفريت باربي، فحبه للخط العربي والثقافة الإسلامية دفعاه إلى ترك منزله في ولاية تينيسي والانتقال إلى بيروت للتفرغ للكتابة بالخط العربي.

حبر وريشة.. وكلمات.. وإفريت عالق بينها لساعات، هكذا يمضي مجمل أيامه في شقته الصغيرة القابعة على سطح أحد المباني في العاصمة اللبنانية بيروت.

ويقول إيفريت: “ما يدفعني و يحفزني على العمل في مجال الخط العربي هو رغبتي بالاحتفاء بالشرق وبالإسلام، مشيرا إلى “مفاهيم خاطئة كثيرة كتلك المتعلقة بالخوف من الإسلام سائدة لدينا في الغرب.. أرغب في المساهمة في إزالتها عن طريق الفن والخط”.

وبدأت رحلة إيفريت مع الخط العربي قبل خمسة أعوام من دمشق، حيث “عشق” الخط العربي”، فترك مدينته في ولاية تينيسي وانتقل إلى بيروت مدفوعا بذلك الشغف الذي تحول إلى “مصدر رزقه وأحلامه”.

ويكشف إيفريت أنه يعمل “حاليا على مشروع مصحف لكتابة القرآن كله في 114 لوحة كل منها تجسد سورة.. سيكون معظمها زخارف إسلامية أحاول الالتزام بالقواعد الإسلامية والابتعاد عن رسم الكائنات الحية مع مراعاة النواحي الجمالية لكي يستمتع الجمهور الغربي بها أيضا”.

ويبيع إيفريت حاليا لوحاته على الإنترنت، إلا أنه يعترف دون أن يفصح عن كل التفاصيل أن في باله المزيد من الأفكار والأحلام، جميعها تربط مستقبله أكثر وأكثر بالخط العربي

36:01 Ya, Seen.

وَالْقُرْآَنِ الْحَكِيمِ

36:02 By the wise Qur’an.

إِنَّكَ لَمِنَ الْمُرْسَلِينَ

36:03 Indeed you, [O Muhammad], are from among the messengers,

عَلَى صِرَاطٍ مُسْتَقِيمٍ

36:04 On a straight path.

تَنْزِيلَ الْعَزِيزِ الرَّحِيمِ

36:05 [This is] a revelation of the Exalted in Might, the Merciful,

لِتُنْذِرَ قَوْمًا مَا أُنْذِرَ آَبَاؤُهُمْ فَهُمْ غَافِلُونَ

36:06 That you may warn a people whose forefathers were not warned, so they are unaware.

لَقَدْ حَقَّ الْقَوْلُ عَلَى أَكْثَرِهِمْ فَهُمْ لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ

36:07 Already the word has come into effect upon most of them, so they do not believe.

إِنَّا جَعَلْنَا فِي أَعْنَاقِهِمْ أَغْلَالًا فَهِيَ إِلَى الْأَذْقَانِ فَهُمْ مُقْمَحُونَ

36:08 Indeed, We have put shackles on their necks, and they are to their chins, so they are with heads [kept] aloft.

وَجَعَلْنَا مِنْ بَيْنِ أَيْدِيهِمْ سَدًّا وَمِنْ خَلْفِهِمْ سَدًّا فَأَغْشَيْنَاهُمْ فَهُمْ لَا يُبْصِرُونَ

36:09 And We have put before them a barrier and behind them a barrier and covered them, so they do not see.

وَسَوَاءٌ عَلَيْهِمْ أَأَنْذَرْتَهُمْ أَمْ لَمْ تُنْذِرْهُمْ لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ

36:10 And it is all the same for them whether you warn them or do not warn them – they will not believe.

إِنَّمَا تُنْذِرُ مَنِ اتَّبَعَ الذِّكْرَ وَخَشِيَ الرَّحْمَنَ بِالْغَيْبِ فَبَشِّرْهُ بِمَغْفِرَةٍ وَأَجْرٍ كَرِيمٍ

36:11 You can only warn one who follows the message and fears the Most Merciful unseen. So give him good tidings of forgiveness and noble reward.

إِنَّا نَحْنُ نُحْيِي الْمَوْتَى وَنَكْتُبُ مَا قَدَّمُوا وَآَثَارَهُمْ وَكُلَّ شَيْءٍ أحْصَيْنَاهُ فِي إِمَامٍ مُبِينٍ

36:12 Indeed, it is We who bring the dead to life and record what they have put forth and what they left behind, and all things We have enumerated in a clear register.

وَاضْرِبْ لَهُمْ مَثَلًا أَصْحَابَ الْقَرْيَةِ إِذْ جَاءَهَا الْمُرْسَلُونَ

36:13 And present to them an example: the people of the city, when the messengers came to it –

إِذْ أَرْسَلْنَا إِلَيْهِمُ اثْنَيْنِ فَكَذَّبُوهُمَا فَعَزَّزْنَا بِثَالِثٍ فَقَالُوا إِنَّا إِلَيْكُمْ مُرْسَلُونَ

36:14 When We sent to them two but they denied them, so We strengthened them with a third, and they said, “Indeed, we are messengers to you.”

قَالُوا مَا أَنْتُمْ إِلَّا بَشَرٌ مِثْلُنَا وَمَا أَنْزَلَ الرَّحْمَنُ مِنْ شَيْءٍ إِنْ أَنْتُمْ إِلَّا تَكْذِبُونَ

36:15  They said, “You are not but human beings like us, and the Most Merciful has not revealed a thing. You are only telling lies.”

قَالُوا رَبُّنَا يَعْلَمُ إِنَّا إِلَيْكُمْ لَمُرْسَلُونَ

36:16 They said, “Our Lord knows that we are messengers to you,

وَمَا عَلَيْنَا إِلَّا الْبَلَاغُ الْمُبِينُ

36:17 And we are not responsible except for clear notification.”

قَالُوا إِنَّا تَطَيَّرْنَا بِكُمْ لَئِنْ لَمْ تَنْتَهُوا لَنَرْجُمَنَّكُمْ وَلَيَمَسَّنَّكُمْ مِنَّا عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ

36:18 They said, “Indeed, we consider you a bad omen. If you do not desist, we will surely stone you, and there will surely touch you, from us, a painful punishment.”

قَالُوا طَائِرُكُمْ مَعَكُمْ أَئِنْ ذُكِّرْتُمْ بَلْ أَنْتُمْ قَوْمٌ مُسْرِفُونَ

36:19 They said, “Your omen is with yourselves. Is it because you were reminded? Rather, you are a transgressing people.”

وَجَاءَ مِنْ أَقْصَى الْمَدِينَةِ رَجُلٌ يَسْعَى قَالَ يَا قَوْمِ اتَّبِعُوا الْمُرْسَلِينَ

36:20 And there came from the farthest end of the city a man, running. He said, “O my people, follow the messengers.

اتَّبِعُوا مَنْ لَا يَسْأَلُكُمْ أَجْرًا وَهُمْ مُهْتَدُونَ

36:21 Follow those who do not ask of you [any] payment, and they are [rightly] guided.

وَمَا لِيَ لَا أَعْبُدُ الَّذِي فَطَرَنِي وَإِلَيْهِ تُرْجَعُونَ

36:22 And why should I not worship He who created me and to whom you will be returned?

أَأَتَّخِذُ مِنْ دُونِهِ آَلِهَةً إِنْ يُرِدْنِ الرَّحْمَنُ بِضُرٍّ لَا تُغْنِ عَنِّي شَفَاعَتُهُمْ شَيْئًا وَلَا يُنْقِذُونِ

36:23 Should I take other than Him [false] deities [while], if the Most Merciful intends for me some adversity, their intercession will not avail me at all, nor can they save me?

إِنِّي إِذًا لَفِي ضَلَالٍ مُبِينٍ

36:24 Indeed, I would then be in manifest error

إِنِّي آَمَنْتُ بِرَبِّكُمْ فَاسْمَعُونِ

36:25 Indeed, I have believed in your Lord, so listen to me.”

قِيلَ ادْخُلِ الْجَنَّةَ قَالَ يَا لَيْتَ قَوْمِي يَعْلَمُونَ

36:26 It was said, “Enter Paradise.” He said, “I wish my people could know

بِمَا غَفَرَ لِي رَبِّي وَجَعَلَنِي مِنَ الْمُكْرَمِينَ

36:27 Of how my Lord has forgiven me and placed me among the honored.”

وَمَا أَنْزَلْنَا عَلَى قَوْمِهِ مِنْ بَعْدِهِ مِنْ جُنْدٍ مِنَ السَّمَاءِ وَمَا كُنَّا مُنْزِلِينَ

36:28 And We did not send down upon his people after him any soldiers from the heaven, nor would We have done so.

إِنْ كَانَتْ إِلَّا صَيْحَةً وَاحِدَةً فَإِذَا هُمْ خَامِدُونَ

36:29 It was not but one shout, and immediately they were extinguished.

يَا حَسْرَةً عَلَى الْعِبَادِ مَا يَأْتِيهِمْ مِنْ رَسُولٍ إِلَّا كَانُوا بِهِ يَسْتَهْزِءُونَ

36:30 How regretful for the servants. There did not come to them any messenger except that they used to ridicule him.

أَلَمْ يَرَوْا كَمْ أَهْلَكْنَا قَبْلَهُمْ مِنَ الْقُرُونِ أَنَّهُمْ إِلَيْهِمْ لَا يَرْجِعُونَ

36:31 Have they not considered how many generations We destroyed before them – that they to them will not return?

وَإِنْ كُلٌّ لَمَّا جَمِيعٌ لَدَيْنَا مُحْضَرُونَ

36:32 And indeed, all of them will yet be brought present before Us.

وَآَيَةٌ لَهُمُ الْأَرْضُ الْمَيْتَةُ أَحْيَيْنَاهَا وَأَخْرَجْنَا مِنْهَا حَبًّا فَمِنْهُ يَأْكُلُونَ

36:33 And a sign for them is the dead earth. We have brought it to life and brought forth from it grain, and from it they eat.

وَجَعَلْنَا فِيهَا جَنَّاتٍ مِنْ نَخِيلٍ وَأَعْنَابٍ وَفَجَّرْنَا فِيهَا مِنَ الْعُيُونِ

36:34 And We placed therein gardens of palm trees and grapevines and caused to burst forth therefrom some springs –

لِيَأْكُلُوا مِنْ ثَمَرِهِ وَمَا عَمِلَتْهُ أَيْدِيهِمْ أَفَلَا يَشْكُرُونَ

36:35 That they may eat of His fruit. And their hands have not produced it, so will they not be grateful?

سُبْحَانَ الَّذِي خَلَقَ الْأَزْوَاجَ كُلَّهَا مِمَّا تُنْبِتُ الْأَرْضُ وَمِنْ أَنْفُسِهِمْ وَمِمَّا لَا يَعْلَمُونَ

36:36 Exalted is He who created all pairs – from what the earth grows and from themselves and from that which they do not know.

وَآَيَةٌ لَهُمُ اللَّيْلُ نَسْلَخُ مِنْهُ النَّهَارَ فَإِذَا هُمْ مُظْلِمُونَ

36:37 And a sign for them is the night. We remove from it [the light of] day, so they are [left] in darkness.

وَالشَّمْسُ تَجْرِي لِمُسْتَقَرٍّ لَهَا ذَلِكَ تَقْدِيرُ الْعَزِيزِ الْعَلِيمِ

36:38 And the sun runs [on course] toward its stopping point. That is the determination of the Exalted in Might, the Knowing.

وَالْقَمَرَ قَدَّرْنَاهُ مَنَازِلَ حَتَّى عَادَ كَالْعُرْجُونِ الْقَدِيمِ

36:39 And the moon – We have determined for it phases, until it returns [appearing] like the old date stalk.

لَا الشَّمْسُ يَنْبَغِي لَهَا أَنْ تُدْرِكَ الْقَمَرَ وَلَا اللَّيْلُ سَابِقُ النَّهَارِ وَكُلٌّ فِي فَلَكٍ يَسْبَحُونَ

36:40 It is not allowable for the sun to reach the moon, nor does the night overtake the day, but each, in an orbit, is swimming.

وَآَيَةٌ لَهُمْ أَنَّا حَمَلْنَا ذُرِّيَّتَهُمْ فِي الْفُلْكِ الْمَشْحُونِ

36:41 And a sign for them is that We carried their forefathers in a laden ship.

وَخَلَقْنَا لَهُمْ مِنْ مِثْلِهِ مَا يَرْكَبُونَ

36:42 And We created for them from the likes of it that which they ride.

وَإِنْ نَشَأْ نُغْرِقْهُمْ فَلَا صَرِيخَ لَهُمْ وَلَا هُمْ يُنْقَذُونَ

36:43 And if We should will, We could drown them; then no one responding to a cry would there be for them, nor would they be saved

إِلَّا رَحْمَةً مِنَّا وَمَتَاعًا إِلَى حِينٍ

36:44 Except as a mercy from Us and provision for a time.

وَإِذَا قِيلَ لَهُمُ اتَّقُوا مَا بَيْنَ أَيْدِيكُمْ وَمَا خَلْفَكُمْ لَعَلَّكُمْ تُرْحَمُونَ

36:45 But when it is said to them, “Beware of what is before you and what is behind you; perhaps you will receive mercy…”

وَمَا تَأْتِيهِمْ مِنْ آَيَةٍ مِنْ آَيَاتِ رَبِّهِمْ إِلَّا كَانُوا عَنْهَا مُعْرِضِينَ

36:46 And no sign comes to them from the signs of their Lord except that they are from it turning away.

وَإِذَا قِيلَ لَهُمْ أَنْفِقُوا مِمَّا رَزَقَكُمُ اللَّهُ قَالَ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا لِلَّذِينَ آَمَنُوا أَنُطْعِمُ مَنْ لَوْ يَشَاءُ اللَّهُ أَطْعَمَهُ إِنْ أَنْتُمْ إِلَّا فِي ضَلَالٍ مُبِينٍ

36:47 And when it is said to them, “Spend from that which Allah has provided for you,” those who disbelieve say to those who believe, “Should we feed one whom, if Allah had willed, He would have fed? You are not but in clear error.”

وَيَقُولُونَ مَتَى هَذَا الْوَعْدُ إِنْ كُنْتُمْ صَادِقِينَ

36:48 And they say, “When is this promise, if you should be truthful?”

مَا يَنْظُرُونَ إِلَّا صَيْحَةً وَاحِدَةً تَأْخُذُهُمْ وَهُمْ يَخِصِّمُونَ

36:49 They do not await except one blast which will seize them while they are disputing.

فَلَا يَسْتَطِيعُونَ تَوْصِيَةً وَلَا إِلَى أَهْلِهِمْ يَرْجِعُونَ

36:50 And they will not be able [to give] any instruction, nor to their people can they return.

وَنُفِخَ فِي الصُّورِ فَإِذَا هُمْ مِنَ الْأَجْدَاثِ إِلَى رَبِّهِمْ يَنْسِلُونَ

36:51 And the Horn will be blown; and at once from the graves to their Lord they will hasten.

قَالُوا يَا وَيْلَنَا مَنْ بَعَثَنَا مِنْ مَرْقَدِنَا هَذَا مَا وَعَدَ الرَّحْمَنُ وَصَدَقَ الْمُرْسَلُونَ

36:52 They will say, “O woe to us! Who has raised us up from our sleeping place?” [The reply will be], “This is what the Most Merciful had promised, and the messengers told the truth.”

إِنْ كَانَتْ إِلَّا صَيْحَةً وَاحِدَةً فَإِذَا هُمْ جَمِيعٌ لَدَيْنَا مُحْضَرُونَ

36:53 It will not be but one blast, and at once they are all brought present before Us.

فَالْيَوْمَ لَا تُظْلَمُ نَفْسٌ شَيْئًا وَلَا تُجْزَوْنَ إِلَّا مَا كُنْتُمْ تَعْمَلُونَ

36:54 So today no soul will be wronged at all, and you will not be recompensed except for what you used to do.

إِنَّ أَصْحَابَ الْجَنَّةِ الْيَوْمَ فِي شُغُلٍ فَاكِهُونَ

36:55 Indeed the companions of Paradise, that Day, will be amused in [joyful] occupation –

مْ وَأَزْوَاجُهُمْ فِي ظِلَالٍ عَلَى الْأَرَائِكِ مُتَّكِئُونَ

36:56 They and their spouses – in shade, reclining on adorned couches.

لَهُمْ فِيهَا فَاكِهَةٌ وَلَهُمْ مَا يَدَّعُونَ

36:57 For them therein is fruit, and for them is whatever they request [or wish]

سَلَامٌ قَوْلًا مِنْ رَبٍّ رَحِيمٍ

36:58 [And] “Peace,” a word from a Merciful Lord.

وَامْتَازُوا الْيَوْمَ أَيُّهَا الْمُجْرِمُونَ

36:59 [Then He will say], “But stand apart today, you criminals.

أَلَمْ أَعْهَدْ إِلَيْكُمْ يَا بَنِي آَدَمَ أَنْ لَا تَعْبُدُوا الشَّيْطَانَ إِنَّهُ لَكُمْ عَدُوٌّ مُبِينٌ

36:60 Did I not enjoin upon you, O children of Adam, that you not worship Satan – [for] indeed, he is to you a clear enemy –

 وَأَنِ اعْبُدُونِي هَذَا صِرَاطٌ مُسْتَقِيمٌ

36:61 And that you worship [only] Me? This is a straight path.

وَلَقَدْ أَضَلَّ مِنْكُمْ جِبِلًّا كَثِيرًا أَفَلَمْ تَكُونُوا تَعْقِلُونَ

36:62 And he had already led astray from among you much of creation, so did you not use reason?

هَذِهِ جَهَنَّمُ الَّتِي كُنْتُمْ تُوعَدُونَ

36:63 This is the Hellfire which you were promised.

اصْلَوْهَا الْيَوْمَ بِمَا كُنْتُمْ تَكْفُرُونَ

36:64 [Enter to] burn therein today for what you used to deny.”

لْيَوْمَ نَخْتِمُ عَلَى أَفْوَاهِهِمْ وَتُكَلِّمُنَا أَيْدِيهِمْ وَتَشْهَدُ أَرْجُلُهُمْ بِمَا كَانُوا يَكْسِبُونَ

36:65 That Day, We will seal over their mouths, and their hands will speak to Us, and their feet will testify about what they used to earn.

وَلَوْ نَشَاءُ لَطَمَسْنَا عَلَى أَعْيُنِهِمْ فَاسْتَبَقُوا الصِّرَاطَ فَأَنَّى يُبْصِرُونَ

36:66 And if We willed, We could have obliterated their eyes, and they would race to [find] the path, and how could they see?

وَلَوْ نَشَاءُ لَمَسَخْنَاهُمْ عَلَى مَكَانَتِهِمْ فَمَا اسْتَطَاعُوا مُضِيًّا وَلَا يَرْجِعُونَ

36:67 And if We willed, We could have deformed them, [paralyzing them] in their places so they would not be able to proceed, nor could they return.

وَمَنْ نُعَمِّرْهُ نُنَكِّسْهُ فِي الْخَلْقِ أَفَلَا يَعْقِلُونَ

36:68 And he to whom We grant long life We reverse in creation; so will they not understand?

وَمَا عَلَّمْنَاهُ الشِّعْرَ وَمَا يَنْبَغِي لَهُ إِنْ هُوَ إِلَّا ذِكْرٌ وَقُرْآَنٌ مُبِينٌ

36:69 And We did not give Prophet Muhammad, knowledge of poetry, nor is it befitting for him. It is not but a message and a clear Qur’an

لِيُنْذِرَ مَنْ كَانَ حَيًّا وَيَحِقَّ الْقَوْلُ عَلَى الْكَافِرِينَ

36:70 To warn whoever is alive and justify the word against the disbelievers.

أَوَلَمْ يَرَوْا أَنَّا خَلَقْنَا لَهُمْ مِمَّا عَمِلَتْ أَيْدِينَا أَنْعَامًا فَهُمْ لَهَا مَالِكُونَ

36:71 Do they not see that We have created for them from what Our hands have made, grazing livestock, and [then] they are their owners?

وَذَلَّلْنَاهَا لَهُمْ فَمِنْهَا رَكُوبُهُمْ وَمِنْهَا يَأْكُلُونَ

36:72 And We have tamed them for them, so some of them they ride, and some of them they eat.

وَلَهُمْ فِيهَا مَنَافِعُ وَمَشَارِبُ أَفَلَا يَشْكُرُونَ

36:73 And for them therein are [other] benefits and drinks, so will they not be grateful.

وَاتَّخَذُوا مِنْ دُونِ اللَّهِ آَلِهَةً لَعَلَّهُمْ يُنْصَرُونَ

36:74 But they have taken besides Allah [false] deities that perhaps they would be helped.

لَا يَسْتَطِيعُونَ نَصْرَهُمْ وَهُمْ لَهُمْ جُنْدٌ مُحْضَرُونَ

36:75 They are not able to help them, and they [themselves] are for them soldiers in attendance.

فَلَا يَحْزُنْكَ قَوْلُهُمْ إِنَّا نَعْلَمُ مَا يُسِرُّونَ وَمَا يُعْلِنُونَ

36:76 So let not their speech grieve you. Indeed, We know what they conceal and what they declare.

أَوَلَمْ يَرَ الْإِنْسَانُ أَنَّا خَلَقْنَاهُ مِنْ نُطْفَةٍ فَإِذَا هُوَ خَصِيمٌ مُبِينٌ

36:77 Does man not consider that We created him from a [mere] sperm-drop – then at once he is a clear adversary?

وَضَرَبَ لَنَا مَثَلًا وَنَسِيَ خَلْقَهُ قَالَ مَنْ يُحْيِي الْعِظَامَ وَهِيَ رَمِيمٌ

36:78 And he presents for Us an example and forgets his [own] creation. He says, “Who will give life to bones while they are disintegrated?”

قُلْ يُحْيِيهَا الَّذِي أَنْشَأَهَا أَوَّلَ مَرَّةٍ وَهُوَ بِكُلِّ خَلْقٍ عَلِيمٌ

36:79 Say, “He will give them life who produced them the first time; and He is, of all creation, Knowing.”

لَّذِي جَعَلَ لَكُمْ مِنَ الشَّجَرِ الْأَخْضَرِ نَارًا فَإِذَا أَنْتُمْ مِنْهُ تُوقِدُونَ

36:80 [It is] He who made for you from the green tree, fire, and then from it you ignite.

أَوَلَيْسَ الَّذِي خَلَقَ السَّمَوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضَ بِقَادِرٍ عَلَى أَنْ يَخْلُقَ مِثْلَهُمْ بَلَى وَهُوَ الْخَلَّاقُ الْعَلِيمُ

36:81 Is not He who created the heavens and the earth Able to create the likes of them? Yes, [it is so]; and He is the Knowing Creator.

إِنَّمَا أَمْرُهُ إِذَا أَرَادَ شَيْئًا أَنْ يَقُولَ لَهُ كُنْ فَيَكُونُ

36:82 His command is only when He intends a thing that He says to it, “Be,” and it is.

فَسُبْحَانَ الَّذِي بِيَدِهِ مَلَكُوتُ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ وَإِلَيْهِ تُرْجَعُونَ

36:83 So exalted is He in whose hand is the realm of all things, and to Him you will be returned.

This Surah, entitled ‘Al-Humazah’, meaning ‘the scorner’ is composed of 9 different verses.  A translation of the whole surah can be seen below, courtesy of Sahih International. The Hindi numerals appear at the end of every verse. All 42 verses are included, and none are repeated.

هذه السورة، بعنوان “الهمزة”، تتألف من 9 آيات مختلفة. ويمكن الاطلاع على الترجمة الكاملة للسورة أدناه،  من صحيح انترناشيونال. وتظهر الأرقام الهندية في نهاية كل آية. تم تضمين كافة الآيات ال 42، بدون تكرار

وَيْلٌ لِكُلِّ هُمَزَةٍ لُمَزَةٍ

104:01 Woe to every scorner and mocker

الَّذِي جَمَعَ مَالًا وَعَدَّدَهُ

104:02 Who collects wealth and [continuously] counts it.

يَحْسَبُ أَنَّ مَالَهُ أَخْلَدَهُ

104:03 He thinks that his wealth will make him immortal.

كَلَّا لَيُنْبَذَنَّ فِي الْحُطَمَةِ

104:04 No! He will surely be thrown into the Crusher.

وَمَا أَدْرَاكَ مَا الْحُطَمَةُ

104:05 And what can make you know what is the Crusher?

نَارُ اللَّهِ الْمُوقَدَةُ

104:06 It is the fire of Allah, [eternally] fueled,

الَّتِي تَطَّلِعُ عَلَى الْأَفْئِدَةِ

104:07 Which mounts directed at the hearts.

إِنَّهَا عَلَيْهِمْ مُؤْصَدَةٌ

104:08 Indeed, Hellfire will be closed down upon them

فِي عَمَدٍ مُمَدَّدَةٍ

104:09 In extended columns.

This piece features Al-Mutanabbi’s proverb “إذا رأيت نيوب الليث فلا تظنن أن الليث يبتسم”
“Just because you see the lion’s teeth don’t assume that the lion is smiling”
The quote is written exactly six times throughout the image of the Lion.
